13. Collection Selection

(25/5/23)
This post is updating that I have managed to make a selection of a collection of paintings for my FMP show. In total in the process of creating my final major project I created 5 paintings, but I have selected only 3 to be included in my final collection. First I will include an honourable mention section with pictres of the paintings that didn’t make the Final Cut, this is below.

The above painting didn’t make the cut because I just didn’t find a tile to complete it and it felt like it had a seperate energy to the rest of the paintings, this was due in part because I applied the paint with my fingers and there is a pure abstraction to it as it is not attempting to depict anything other than gesural brush strokes and finger painted sections which give the painting a kenetic movement. I do really enjoy this painting and how thickly the paint is applied but it just didn’t have what it took to be included in the show as it was too different and on its own from the rest of the paintings I produced. Perhaps in the future this may fit in.

The above self portrait did not make it past it efinsl decision making process as it complclashed with the styles of the many of the work i produced. If o had included it it would be completely out of context and out of place among the other paintings. This is because of the contrast of the mark making in this being less free and more deliberate than the others
I produced that are much more free and energeti, but there are still elements of this piece I love , like the lips and the bottom portion where the moustache is, the top half feels unfinished and less considered.

Now I will include pictures of the works I chose to include on my final collection, or triptych of paintings.

These three paintings feel as if they are a part of one another and they have some same elements that tie them together. These elements are the blacked out eyes and glaring mouths showing teeth, as well as all having a similar naive, crude style that implement energetic mark making and brushwork in areas, as well as mixed media approaches with the materials I have used. These paintings really feel like they belong together as a family, but also have a personality of their own when viewed on their own. Each painting has a darkness that passes through them as a body of work but this darkness is offset and counter balanced by the bright colours and energetic surreal approach to each painting.

My next post will be of hanging these paintings in preparation for the FMP show and I will go into more detail about this collection of painting and their meaning and how I have decided the sequence in which to hang them.
