Gummo Inspiration
Sometimes inspiration strikes in the most unexpected ways. I had been thinking of and seeking new directions to take a new piece of work in. Something that builds on the back of the work I have been creating in recent years with liquid latex, texturising pastes, oil paints and them all being set fire to.

These past works have mostly been off whites, blacks, greys and varying shades of beige of liquid latex. And although I enjoy the boldness of the subtlety of the off whites and alive and crawling latex colours and textures, I had been looking to progress these textures into a new space.
While searching Instagram I stumbled upon a post from a page called Unifiedgoods that had made a 25th birthday T-Shirt for the Harmony Korine film Gummo. (Post Pictured Below).
The image on the T-Shirt immediately caught my eye because of the grimey and wonderful colours and imagery that adorn the shirt. Naturally, after seeing this image I went in search of other similarly coloured stills from the film with similar unsettling imagaery and managed to find a few images to serve as inspiration. the next step will be to watch the film and see what other intreaguing imagery is used. (More Stills and promotional material below).

From these images I have found great inspiration in the colour pallets used and the fuzzy/blurry quality of the colours and how they mix in the image. The grain of film that is present and gives the image and colours a distorted quality. The beautiful vibrant colours mixed with the slightly unsettling imagery is the point and counter point I seek to implement in the new pieces I am in the process of creating. The middle ground between beauty and ugly where they both co-exist. I will be achieving this by using vibrant colours that compliment one another for an effect of bubblegumBeauty. Using similar methods of melting latex and rubber onto the surface and materials to create a living effect that captures a throbbing, fragmented mess crawling around on the board.
