13. Evaluation

(2/2/23)
Today I spent a portion of time deciding on the paintings I wanted to Include in my final body of work for the end of the first part of my studio practice. Because I had been thinking about this for a while it made the decision slightly easier as I didn’t have to spend an extended period of time selecting paintings. My main thoughts going into choosing the paintings to Include were a holistic and cohesive nature of all the paintings so that they appear as a family with similar elements but slight variations between them.

Out of the 9 pieces I have made, I chose to include only 4 of them. This is because of my aforementioned desire for a cohesive family like collection of paintings. Ones that share similar elements and hang well together as a solid body of work to be admired (or not).

I will now include an honourable mention section with images of the paintings I made that did not make the final selection.

These are all pieces that either did not bear the same qualities as the selected ones, in colour scheme, construction, subject matter or that they were merely test pieces. But having said that, I feel that some can be utilised for inspiration and references for the direction I go in with the second part of my studio practice.

After I had made the final selection of paintings for my body of work, I set to finding tools to be able to mount them on the wall in the H.E. Lounge. This proved to be quite easy, other than having to be careful with some of the boards I had painted on because the screws I used were sligtly too long and I didn’t want them to break through the surface if the panting. Below is a description and more in depth detail and context of the paintings, then pictures of my final body of work up on the wall.

I decided to call this collection “HEAVEN AND HELL ARE MADE OF OTHER PEOPLE”. Not only does it imply a quote, “Hell is other people”, from Jean Paul Sartre’s play “No Exit”. This title plays into the themes of these paintings, which are Love, Loss, Grief and Estrangement. Choosing to use words with a direct evangelical connotation to express an ultimate ecstasy in heaven, and an eternal pain in hell to furthur exemplify, if not dramatise, love, loss, grief and estrangement as a set of themes innate to my experiences and the human experience as a whole. This title implies how other people can prove to be the greatest and most beautiful wonders in ones life, But simultaneously cause the most pain when they depart.
This body of work is about Love
This body of work is about Loss
This body of work is about Pain
This body of work is about Beauty

I am overall happy with the body of work I have created as it exemplifies qualities that I set out to create. These being a holistic sense between works that present cohesively, as well as setting myself out to play more with colour as opposed to only black and white, in turn challenging myself more. I also feel that these works have a striking and bold nature to them though the use of a trade mark red strip and set of colours, including Red, Pink, Black, White, Orange and yellow. Not only is this a collection of work I can be proud of, but it is a collection I can build upon in the future if I wish to do so.

Things I think I could have done better about these pieces is creating them on a larger scale. I feel that having some of the smaller elements on a larger scale, such as some of the mark making and burnt elements,  would add to their impact and consequently add to the impact of the collection as a whole. Another is that i would have liked to build the texture of these paintings and play with more painterly aspects such as implementing more brush strokes and energy into these pieces, but ultimately this may have clashed with the hard edges of the red strip, but I believe the finger painted aspects do just as well at exploring that possibility and energy. More brush strokes can be something I can add to future developments of this series.
