3. In Bloom
(7/3/23)

Today I made very nice progress on the piece I had made a mistake on last week. Now this piece feels a lot more full and as if it has an energy to it. This is in part due to how I painted on it, as I splattered varying tones of muted greyed colour on the outsides of the ovals that I had painted grey, then around the ovals I painted with yellow oil paint with my fingers to give it a unique effect rather than having a consistent effect with brush stroaks, then I applied a lighter Ochre yellow lining the bright yellow. This painting seems to be blooming and forming itself right in front of my eyes as I chip away at it piece by piece. I also enjoy that the layers are visable as you can still see the mistake I spoke about in the last blog post peeking through the splattered and gesturally applied paint of the outsides. Below I will attach a picture of this Piece.
A point of inspiration for the addition of the yellow paint and flower like appearance are the paintings of Vincent Van Gogh. Specifically his paintings of flowers. I was not attempting to mimick or copy his style in the manner I painted the petal like lashes, but I wanted to mimick the energy in his paintings and have my work emit a kind of frenetic energy that grabs attention and pronounces itself when revealed. Although Van Gogh used brushes you can still see his unique brush work and texture of the paint, so I attempted to gain a similar texture and energy through using my pingers to paint with rather than a brush as I feel I get sick of using brushes sometimes. The colour pallet in van goghs work that I have been looking at also influecenced me to use the yellow colours that appear in my painting as I have always admired his use of yellow. Below I will attach examples of Van Goghs work.
As far as the gestural mess that surrounds the yellow of the abstract flower places in the middle, there wasn’t much behind it other than adding more interesting texture and Mix of colours to the painting. I was very much in search of a greater texture when applying the paint to this portion of the painting and just going with what felt right in the moment to me and that was to make featureless stroaks and solashes with variying shades of emulsion paint.
