2. Mistakes and Coverups
(23/2/23)
Today I had a small window of time to do a bit of work on some paintings. I stood and sat for a while looking at the painting I had started a couple of days previous pondering what I should add. I couldn’t get the idea out of my head of a red line on the outside of the black ovals I had already created, so I grabbed a pot of red enamel paint and set to making a line on the outer left side but as soon as I had done it I realised that I did not like it at all, so I managed cover it up with some gestural marks in white paint that mixed very nicely with the red to create a pink blending into white with some red leftover. After this I took more time out to asses what I had done and how I could amend it, but the stress didn’t weigh on me too much as the painting is currently at a loose end of sorts as it does not at this dime have a specific direction. Pictured below is the mistake and coverup in question.
Today wasn’t meant to be a full practice day so I wasn’t prepared or in the frame of mind to be painting today, but as a small section of time to work I do feel that this mistake has gifted something to the piece in the gestural stroaks. And has allowed me to think less rigidly about the form of the painting and it’s subsequent direction. Usually I prefer to be mentally prepared for a day painting so I can prepare to release emotions and thoughts I have been having into a painting, but when I haven’t prepared mentally it can be very difficult to launch oneself into that frame of mind, therefore finding it much more difficult to paint freely.
